Major General (Retired) Robert L. Caslen Jr. is a retired United States Army officer who served as the 59th Superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point from 2014 to 2019. Caslen was born in Columbia, South Carolina and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1975. He was commissioned as an Armor officer and served in a variety of command and staff positions in the United States and overseas. He served in the Gulf War and in Iraq, and was the Commanding General of the 25th Infantry Division from 2006 to 2008. Caslen was the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy from 2014 to 2019. During his tenure, he oversaw the modernization of the Academy’s curriculum and the construction of new facilities. He also led the Academy’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Caslen is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Association of the United States Army.
