Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-1896) was a Mexican politician, historian, and novelist. He was born in Mexico City and studied law at the Colegio de San Ildefonso. He was a member of the Liberal Party and served as a deputy in the Mexican Congress from 1867 to 1871. He was also a member of the Supreme Court of Justice from 1871 to 1876. Riva Palacio was a prolific writer, publishing numerous works of fiction, history, and political commentary. He wrote the novel El Zarco (1877), which was adapted into a film in 1923. He also wrote the historical novel La Noche Triste (1881), which recounts the events of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. He wrote several biographies, including those of Miguel Hidalgo and José María Morelos. He also wrote a number of political essays, including El Partido Liberal (1876) and El Partido Conservador (1877). Riva Palacio was an important figure in Mexican politics and literature. He was a strong advocate for liberal reforms and was a major influence on the Mexican Revolution of 1910. He is remembered as one of the most important Mexican writers of the 19th century.
