Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977) was a Russian-American novelist, poet, and literary critic. He is best known for his novel Lolita (1955), which tells the story of a middle-aged man's obsession with a young girl. Nabokov was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, and moved to the United States in 1940. He wrote in both Russian and English, and his works often explored themes of exile, memory, and identity. He also wrote several short stories, plays, and poems. Nabokov was a professor of Russian and European literature at Cornell University from 1948 to 1959. He was awarded the National Medal for Literature in 1970.
