Watkin Tench (1758–1833) was a British marine officer and author. He is best known for his two books, A Narrative of the Expedition to Botany Bay (1789) and A Complete Account of the Settlement at Port Jackson (1793). Tench was born in London and joined the Royal Marines in 1776. He served in the American Revolutionary War and was part of the First Fleet to Australia in 1788. He was one of the first Europeans to explore the area around Sydney Harbour. Tench wrote extensively about his experiences in Australia, including his observations of the Aboriginal people. His books were widely read and provided a valuable insight into the early days of the colony. Tench returned to England in 1791 and continued to serve in the Royal Marines until his retirement in 1802. He died in 1833.
