Wilfred Thomason Grenfell

Sir Wilfred Thomason Grenfell (1865-1940) was a British medical missionary and philanthropist who worked in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He was born in Parkgate, England, and studied medicine at the London Hospital Medical College. He joined the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen in 1892 and was sent to Newfoundland and Labrador to provide medical care to the fishermen and their families. Grenfell established a network of hospitals, schools, and other social services in the region, and was knighted in 1927 for his work. He wrote several books about his experiences, including Adrift on an Ice-Pan (1909) and A Labrador Doctor (1916). He also wrote a number of articles and pamphlets about the region and its people. He died in 1940 in London, England.
