Will James was a Canadian-American artist and author, best known for his books about the American West. Born Joseph Ernest Nephtali Dufault on June 6, 1892, in Quebec, Canada, he moved to the United States and adopted the name Will James. He gained fame for his book "Smoky the Cowhorse," which won the Newbery Medal in 1927. James was also a skilled illustrator, often providing artwork for his own books. His works reflect his experiences as a cowboy and his deep appreciation for Western life. He died on September 3, 1942.
