William Carron (1790-1863) was a Scottish-born explorer and author. He was born in Edinburgh and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He joined the Royal Navy in 1809 and served in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1817, he joined the Royal Navy's Arctic Expedition, which was led by Edward Belcher. Carron was the expedition's naturalist and wrote a detailed account of the expedition, Narrative Of An Expedition Undertaken By E.B. Kennedy, which was published in 1849. Carron later served in the Mediterranean and the West Indies, and was promoted to the rank of Commander in 1837. He retired from the Navy in 1841 and returned to Scotland, where he wrote several books on natural history and exploration. He died in 1863.
