William Combe (1741–1823) was an English author and satirist. He is best known for his comic poem The Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque (1812). Combe was born in London and educated at Westminster School. He was a friend of the poet and satirist William Gifford, and wrote for Gifford's periodical The Anti-Jacobin. He also wrote for the Monthly Magazine and the Morning Chronicle. Combe's other works include The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax (1820), The English Dance of Death (1815–1816), and The Diaboliad (1821). He also wrote a number of biographies, including those of William Hogarth, Thomas Gainsborough, and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Combe died in 1823 in London.
