Born on September 19, 1911, in St Columb Minor, Cornwall, England, he was a British novelist, playwright, and poet. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, participating in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. After the war, he taught school and wrote novels in his spare time. His first novel, Lord of the Flies (1954), was a huge success, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1983. He died on June 19, 1993, at the age of 81.
