William Howard (1777-1860) was an English author and mountaineer. He was born in London and educated at Eton College. He was a member of the Royal Society of Literature and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Howard was an avid mountaineer and wrote several books about his adventures, including Narrative of a Journey to the Summit of Mont Blanc (1821). He was the first Englishman to ascend Mont Blanc and his book was the first to describe the ascent in detail. He also wrote about his travels in Switzerland, Italy, and France. Howard was a passionate advocate for the preservation of the Alps and was instrumental in the formation of the Alpine Club in 1857. He was also a noted philanthropist and was involved in numerous charities. He died in 1860 at the age of 83.
