William Mulready (1786-1863) was an Irish painter and illustrator. He was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, and was the son of a shoemaker. He studied at the Dublin Society Schools and the Royal Academy in London. He was a successful portrait painter, and his works were exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He was also a prolific illustrator, producing illustrations for books such as The Vicar of Wakefield and The Arabian Nights. He was a founding member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and was knighted in 1838. He died in London in 1863.
