William Ralph Inge (1860–1954) was an English author, Anglican priest, and professor of divinity at Cambridge University. He was known as the "Gloomy Dean" due to his pessimistic views on modern society. Inge wrote extensively on religious and philosophical topics, and his works include Christian Mysticism (1899), The Idea of Progress (1910), and Outspoken Essays (1919). He was also a prolific essayist, contributing to The Spectator, The Observer, and The Times Literary Supplement. Inge was a Fellow of the British Academy and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1933.
