William Whitman

William Whitman is not a clearly identifiable major literary author in standard biographical reference works. The name is often confused with Walt Whitman, the American poet born Walter Whitman on May 31, 1819, in West Hills, New York. Walt Whitman became one of the central figures of American poetry through Leaves of Grass, first published in 1855 and repeatedly revised throughout his life. His free verse, expansive democratic vision, celebration of the body and the individual, and attention to American life transformed English-language poetry. He also worked as a printer, teacher, journalist, editor, and Civil War hospital volunteer. Whitman died in Camden, New Jersey, on March 26, 1892.
