Yevgeny Zamyatin (1884-1937) was a Russian author and political activist. He is best known for his dystopian novel We, which was an inspiration for George Orwell's 1984. Zamyatin was born in Lebedyan, Russia, and studied naval engineering in St. Petersburg. He began writing fiction in the early 1900s, and his works were published in various literary journals. His first novel, A Fisher of Men, was published in 1909. Zamyatin was an outspoken critic of the Soviet regime, and his works were banned in the Soviet Union. He was arrested and exiled in 1931, and he died in Paris in 1937. Zamyatin's works have been translated into many languages and have been adapted into films and plays. He is considered one of the most important Russian authors of the 20th century.
