Hitler was released from prison on December 20th, 1924, and found the National Socialist movement in a sorry state without him. The end of the Ruhr occupation and the worst part of the hyperinflation crisis meant that the general population was less interested in radical politics, and this was reflected in shrinking support for fringe parties. The NSDAP and SA had been banned. In 1924, during Hitler's imprisonment, a successor organization to the NSDAP, the Großdeutsche Volksgemeinschaft (Greater German People's Community, GVG for short) was founded, first under the leadership of the aloof and somewhat unpopular folkish-pagan intellectual Alfred Rosenberg, then under the coarse-mannered roughnecks Hermann Esser and Julius Streicher. These figures were not widely seen as the best leadership material for the successor to the NSDAP, and the GVG had very little support outside of Bavaria.
