And in any case Stanmere was no setting for this kind of thing. The mysterious in connection with so fine a place was absurd. Nothing cheap or tawdry had ever existed there; the old walls and trim lawns protested against any suggestion of that kind.
And Lady Stanmere, placid and most gentle of women, was lying asleep upstairs in happy ignorance of all that was going on. Gay laughed.
