In an instant Grace perceived the new danger. The exact meaning of the question came to her in a lightning flash. And now it seemed to Grace as if her difficulty was on all fours with the same low class of crime. It was well known already that she had married a man she both hated and despised merely as a matter of convenience; all her friends knew that she was greatly attached to Max Graham, and here was a witness in a position to prove that Max Graham had visited her late at night on the very day of her marriage.
