At nine o'clock that evening a caller came to the Cummings house on Nickerson's Hill. David was, as usual, at his desk in the sitting room when Kohath announced the arrival. Captain Barnabas was out, attending a deacons' meeting in the New Church vestry. Mr. Briggs was very much impressed when he announced the visitor.

-"It's Mr. Ben Brewster," he whispered. "Says he wants to see you, he does. Must be pretty important, don't you think, 'cause he's walked way down here, 'stead of comin' to the bank or askin' you to come to see him, or anything. What do you cal'late he's got on his mind, Cap'n Dave?"
