Before their arrival, Labosseer had decided to act upon Bert's request by sending one of his stockmen, Heffernan, over to Healey with Logan's mare. This man, lately engaged by Labosseer, Bert knew to be a member of the Eagle Hawk fraternity. Labosseer was on the alert for him when he arrived at the homestead early in the morning. Bert had told his host what he had heard about Heffernan on the day the attack was planned in the cave.
