The story of how Mrs Mazere crossed the Yarrabongo in the great flood to help a neighbour was a favourite yarn with the old hands up the country while ever one of them remained to tell it. As related by the women, it was a story told proudly. "Your dear old Grandma! she, was the bravest woman who ever lived, " or "Our dear old Mrs Mazere, nothing could frighten her. She brought you into the world, young woman."

The men on the contrary generally related the tale to the accompaniment of tobacco and grog and guffaws.
