The next day Macunaíma woke up with a bad cough and a slight fever that wouldn't let up. Maanape had an inkling and went to boil avocado sprouts, supposing the hero had consumption. Actually it was impaludism, and the cough was just on account of the laryngitis that everyone gets in São Paulo. Now Macunaíma spent the whole time belly down in the bow of the igarité and wasn't ever getting better. When the princess couldn't stand it anymore and came over to play around, the hero actually refused for once sighing:
"Oof. just so lazy."
