Captain Cook's "discovery of Australia" is among the things that every schoolboy knows.
He spent nine days at Botany Bay and resided at Endeavour Inlet, in the Cape York Peninsula, for forty-nine days (June 17th to August 4th, 1770) while the ship was undergoing repairs. Cook, with Sir Joseph Banks, and the other officers of the ship, revelled in botanical and zoological research and explored the land as far as they dared, considering that they were tied, as it were, to the crippled Endeavour.
