In 1903 there appeared a book entitled _The Journal of Arthur Stirling_, purporting to be the real diary of a young poet who had, after a bitter and unsuccessful struggle, committed suicide. An editorial introduction, signed "S. ", gave a sketch of the poet, and quoted from a New York newspaper a notice of his death "by suicide in the Hudson River".
