Homily, Christmas Mass during the Night-December 24, 2003.

The prophetic announcement marks the beginning: "The people who walked in darkness / have seen a great light" (Is 9: 1), a new direction for one's entire life, a direction for all of history that keeps us secure "as we await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God and savior Jesus Christ" (Ti 2: 13). Darkness and light, a path and hope, glimpse and manifestation. It is the prophecy of the chosen, of the promise and of the covenant. It is the path from the darkness of that sunset in the earthly paradise until that night in which the outbreak of "the glory of the Lord shone around them [the shepherds]" (Lk 2: 9).
