The Assassination of Villa

Between 1910 and 1920, three of the major leaders of the Mexican Revolution-Madero, Zapata, and Carranza-were assassinated. As different as their cases were, the deaths of all three had one element in common: they had trusted the wrong person, and that trust had cost them their lives. Until the end, Madero had believed in Huerta's loyalty; Zapata had trusted Jesus Guajardo, a Carrancista officer promising to defect to Zapata's cause; and Carranza had believed in the professions of loyalty of Rodolfo Herrero, who killed him on his way to Veracruz, in the village of Tlaxcalontongo.
