All this time the clouds were gathering in another quarter. Treachery is a game that more than one can play at, and Du Cros had to face danger from it also. It was coming to him indirectly, through no less a person than frivolous Lady Torringdor, and directly from his poor tool Blossom.

Where he had expected little or no opposition to his projects, the danger was the greatest. He had looked forward to crushing Amsted as if he had been an eggshell. Lady Torringdor was a puppet in his hands. But in some lucky, unimagined way, Amsted had turned the tables on him and placed his friend Tom Middlemass in a sound position again. Lady Torringdor had defied him, too. Well, he would know what to do with her when the time came. He would bring her to her knees by the threat of an appeal to her husband.
