Draycott sat in the library with a litter of paper before him. For an hour or more he had been pondering a certain step, and was calculating his forces. There was more than a possibility that it would be expedient for him to leave England for an indefinite period, and he had to put his house in order first. He would take a long rest in some quiet place where his foes would not find him. He would rigidly abstain from drugs in future. Meanwhile, of course, they were necessary. He had just injected a heavy dose of morphia, and his brain was acting under that splendid but treacherous spur.
His imagination was carrying him far, when the door of the library opened and Clench and Grenfell entered. There was something stern and business-like about them both--something that aroused all Draycott's fighting instincts at once. He was ready for the fray, too--his foes could not have arrived at a more opportune time.
