What was the matter with himself, Sairson wondered. Why did he feel so nervous and restless about such a trifle? There had been crises when the shadow of the law had been over him, and the fact had not deprived him of an hour's sleep. He had faced the greatest danger without an extra heartbeat. Now he was trembling from head to foot at Sebag's mere suggestion of a journey to Cromer. What had he to be afraid of? He debated the question over and over again in his mind with no satisfactory result. The police had informed him that his presence would not be required to-day, and the knowledge had relieved him. Why? In the ordinary course it was nothing. As a fact he should have been glad--glad in the knowledge that the mystery was on the point of being solved and the danger removed for all time.

"I can see nothing to be gained by going," he said to Sebag.
