The whole thing had happened so unexpectedly that at the moment Blanche Laurisdale was powerless to act. It was impossible that that strong man could be lying dead amongst the flowers; it was impossible to associate him with death. In the sunshine everything looked so calm and refined and peaceful. A lamb was bleating in a distant meadow, and a bright-eyed robin with his head on one side looked at Lady Laurisdale as if asking a question. Somebody hidden behind a pergola of roses was laughing softly. Presently Laurisdale crossed a lawn with his hands in his pockets.
"What's the matter?" he asked. "Seen a ghost, what?"
