Mrs. Sairson's words fell on deaf ears. Beaumont was gazing around him with an air of critical approval. With all his faults he was a keen admirer of the beautiful; indeed, his love for the beautiful--and costly--was largely responsible for his downfall. He admired the artistic arrangement of the light, the dainty beauty of the flowers, the feathery droop of the palms and ferns. He could see through an open door into the hall beyond with its gleam of painted canvas and glow of polished oak. Here and there was the glint of armor. The whole was set in an atmosphere of great refinement.
