When I met him his name was Candelario José. Years later he showed up with the name of Candelario Lepe because, according to him, he was no longer an Indio. While in prison he learned how to read and write and a bit about the law. Perhaps a lot about the law, since through a fair amount of arguing and with a small book titled Mexicans, This is Your Constitution that he always carried in his pocket, he devoted himself to getting dozens of his old buddies out of jail. He carried around a bunch of cards with his name and the title of "legal advisor," some of which he gave to me to distribute among my friends. And even though I told him that perhaps none of my friends would need his services, he looked at me earnestly, smiled showing off all the gold of his teeth, and with a slap on the shoulders and his tejano hat under his arm, he turned and bounded off. That was in the middle of July of ‘68. And who would have imagined that three months later I would be looking for him with a long list of people, a list that included my three kids, begging him to arrange their release as soon as possible.

-Please oh please-he said to me. You get me a certificate and I'll take care of all the arrangements.
