Homily, Shrine of Saint Cajetan-August 7, 2000.

Dear brothers, we have just heard in the reading how Saint Paul urges us, "Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus" (Phil 2: 5). The same attitude brings us all here to Saint Cajetan, and it is a very profound attitude. That attitude is expressed in many ways: in the hope of those in the queue for several days, even weeks; in the solidarity of the one who brings a bag of mate3 or sugar to those who are needier than he is; in the one who wants to be just, gives thanks for his bread, and asks for work, touching with great faith the image of the Saint while remembering the faces of the loved ones. All these attitudes spring from one even deeper, the attitude described by Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus says that the Samaritan had pity and "was moved with compassion" (Lk 10: 33) when he saw the man injured beside the road. And this is what happens to us making the queue to ask for favors and to thank Saint Cajetan-our hearts are moved with compassion.
