THE flat on the first floor of Audley Court had neither the elegance of White Barn nor the opulent glitter of Horbury's office. It was not furnished to a period. A Sheraton writing-table stood side by side with a marqueterie cabinet. Comfort was the note of it, and quiet colours, restful to tired eyes. Hanaud's first thought, indeed, as he moved into the sitting-room and across to the window and looked over the tree tops of the avenue to the wide grassland of the park, was that here was a refuge for a far-thinking statesman rather than for a double-dealer in the equities.
"Mrs. Horbury will be here immediately," said the butler with a bow.
