The day their parents died began with a big lunch. Unusual to eat that much with half a day's work still to be done. Adelaide had remarked upon it when she ran into the house from working the field. Eleanor ignored her. This wasn't completely uncommon when her mother had lots of work to do.

By any standard, though, the feast awaiting Adelaide and Glenville would've been surprising: clear soup, fried smelts with butter sauce, chicken patties, rice croquettes, sweet potatoes, green corn pudding, and cranberry jelly; pumpkin pie, mince pie, and coffee.
