Jack Reed, McNamara and Marlow, Finn and Matthew Kirby, Mrs. Sterling's son-these were the six riders Clement Cardinal saw. Jack Reed could hardly stomach the rage he felt at having to ride another man's horse since his were all gone. A quarter horse, one of Marlow's. At least it outpaced the other horses. At least this meant Jack Reed would be the first to the Negro woman's cabin.

No one spoke as they rode. What would be the point? They knew where they were going and the two Kirby men could always call out if Jack Reed lost the path. The men didn't speak, but the wind had much to say. It seemed to rake Jack Reed's face and find its way into the hidden corners of his mind. One moment, in particular, had been tucked so far away he thought it would never surface again.
