While Adelaide felt cheated because of the well, there were some pleasant surprises. A root cellar beside the cabin, for instance. The former owner had stored almost one hundred lightning jars filled with preserves, though most of them had cracked. Adelaide felt disgust when she wrenched open the root cellar's door and smelled all the sweet rot. The odor was bad, but the waste of so much food was truly terrible. She spent a day clearing the space. If Mr. Olsen hadn't left her those dried peaches, she might've risked eating those spoiled preserves.
Mr. Olsen did return to her cabin. Took three days. When he arrived, the bed of his wagon remained full and Adelaide almost cried. She'd run through those peaches, and sleeping on only her flannel blanket was already fucking up her back.
