She enjoyed the company of many men who visited, but Matthew was the only one she looked forward to seeing. In late October he invited her to a dance. A half day's ride away. She agreed, happily. Even better, Finn invited Grace and Sam. It felt, in a way, like a family outing. Matthew and Finn borrowed two extra horses for Adelaide, Grace, and Sam to ride on. Grace's horse had been a bit lethargic and she worried about making the long trip.

They all wore their rough clothes for the ride out to the party. Adelaide and Grace kept their dresses for the dance in bags on the backs of their horses. At a certain point it began to rain and the men stopped to put on slickers. The women had theirs, and Sam tucked close under his mother's. The rain slowed them down. In warmer months dances were held right outside, under the stars, but Matthew assured Adelaide tonight's dance would not be outdoors.
