Matthew secured his horse while Adelaide went down to the root cellar for the last of her beans and two of the eggs Grace had given her the week before. Adelaide felt more ashamed of surviving on Grace's charity than she did about the young man sitting in her cabin that evening. About the only thing left in the cellar when she was done was that box of old photos the Mudges left behind. With a gasp she realized she might be able to find pictures of them, turn them in to the sheriff in Big Sandy so they'd have an easier time tracking the horse thieves.

She brought the box inside, along with the food, but didn't open it now. She thought only of Matthew. And herself. She made dinner for two.
