Homily, Meeting of Politicians and Legislators from Latin America-August 3, 1999.

The living Jesus Christ is here, in our midst, as we celebrate the Eucharist. It is the same Lord of life who multiplied the loaves (Mt 14: 17-21), who compelled his disciples to get into the boat (v. 22), who went up the mountain to pray alone (v. 23). The same Lord who, in the early morning, walked on the water to meet the disciples (v. 25), as we heard recently in the Gospel. Before his Lordship we bow our faith-filled hearts and worship him. We join him in this thanksgiving as we begin the work of this meeting focused on the theme: "Family and Life in the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. " He is the Lord of all Life; he is the faithful Witness (Rev 1: 5) who remains in his faithfulness because he cannot deny himself (2 Tm 2: 13). He came to give life and to give it in abundance; it is God with us, a companion on the journey who, at the crossroads of history-the small and the great history-is present. That is why the Spirit moves us to confess him just as the disciples did in the boat when the storm subsided: "Truly, you are the Son of God" (Mt 14: 33).
