Homily, Easter Vigil-April 22, 2000.
A short while ago, in the atrium of the Cathedral, we proclaimed that Jesus Christ was yesterday, is today, and will always be while we scribed this year's date into the Paschal Candle, figure of the Risen Christ. This gesture that the Church has been repeating for centuries is the resounding announcement, throughout history, of what happened that Sunday morning in the cemetery of Jerusalem: the One who existed before Abraham was born, who wanted to become a close companion on our journey, the Good Samaritan who picks us up when we are defeated by life and by our volatile free will, the One who died and was buried and whose sepulcher was sealed; that One has risen and lives forever.
