Before, Chile's voice was the metallic voice of freedom, of wind and silver, before, it resounded in the heights of the newly scarred planet, of our America assailed by thickets and centaurs.

Even the intact snow, in vigil, raised your chorus of honorable leaves, your rivers' song of free waters, the blue majesty of your decorum.

It was Isidoro Erràzuriz pouring his combatant crystalline star, upon obscure and fettered towns, it was Bilbao with his tumultuous little planet's brow, it was Vicuña Mackenna transporting his innumerable germinal foliage impregnated with signs and seeds through other towns where the window was closed to the light. They entered and lit the lamp in the night, and in the bitter day of other towns they were the snow's loftiest light.
