Homily, Solemnity of Corpus Christi-June 5, 1999.
"Do not forget the LORD, your God! " These words, which are a command and a plea, resonate here in a special way today. Remember Israel. remember who you are and from where you were delivered. Moses speaks to his people in this manner. We just heard it: "Do not forget the LORD, your God, who. fed you in the desert with manna, a food unknown to your fathers" (Dt 8: 11, 16). Manna, that little bit of 'bread' kept in the Ark of the Covenant next to the tablets of the Law, summarized for the people of God the memory of God's goodness: a fatherly God, a companion God on the journey, a caring God who lets his people walk in his presence and encourages them with his promises. And the promises were fulfilled in Jesus. In Jesus, all the promises of the Father became reality, a reality as alive, close, and tangible as bread.
