"They invited me to a barbecue party on a farm near Tuxtla. I went because I was told the Governor would be there and I thought there might be a chance to talk to him. A friend introduced us. I thought the Governor wouldn't even remember my name, because though we met and spoke several times when he was in Comitán on his political campaign, it's the way of the world and a person such as he can't keep all the things people ask him in his head. But I was surprised when he questioned me about Chactajal. We talked for a while in the middle of interruptions from other people. In that party atmosphere it didn't seem to me the appropriate moment to explain my problems. I merely said I'd been in Tuxtla several weeks trying to obtain an audience with him. He promised to see me on the following day. But next day when I presented myself very formally at the Government Palace they told me he'd had to make an unexpected trip to Mexico City, because they'd sent for him to settle some business with the President of the Republic, but that I should await his return. So here I am, waiting. I'm satisfied now because I'm sure that when the Governor returns and receives me and understands my problems he'll do everything to settle them favourably. He's a most attractive man, very simple and friendly. One of those rough diamonds from Chiapas but with a big heart.

"As to what you tell me of Mario's illness, I can see no reason to be alarmed. You know how children's symptoms flare up. But if Dr. Mazariegos has told you they're of no moment, it must true. You know very well that he's a most capable doctor and very conscientious, and that you can trust him.
