Mother always gets up very early. From my bed I can hear her hurriedly gulp down a cup of coffee. Then she goes out into the street. Her feet tap the pavement briskly, and as I follow her with my thoughts she climbs the steps of the arcade, passes the barracks, and takes the San Sebastián road. Then the shape of her vanishes and I don't know where she goes. Many times I've asked her to take me along, but she always puts me off saying I'm too small to understand and that it's bad for me to be up early. So, as usual when I want to know anything, I go and ask Nana. She is on the veranda sitting in a leather chair mending clothes. On the ground is a calabash full of threads of many colours.

"Where did Mother go?"
