"Ave Maria! " a woman is calling at the gate. She is old, fat, shabbily dressed, and carries a bundle under her shawl.
With a flutter of starched fustian the servants hurry to let her in, and they offer her an armchair on the veranda. The woman sits, out of breath. She lays the bundle on her lap and with a handkerchief wipes the sweat that trickles down her face and throat. She doesn't get up when Mother comes to greet her.
