At dusk the family congregates on the veranda of the big house.
The flocks of sheep come slowly home, and in the barn the cows are lowing disconsolately at being parted from their heifers. The murmur of men at work grows less. Tools are returned to their place of rest. In the stable the harness, saturated in horse-sweat, is put out to air, and the wind picks up an acrid smell as it blows past. The tame, sullen beasts of burden are grazing wherever they please. Smoke rises from shack and kitchen, blurring and veiling the evening light still more.
