MONDAY, OCTOBER 1st: He kept his course to the west. They made twenty-five leagues; he reckoned twenty leagues to his men. They had a heavy fall of rain. The admiral's pilot on this day at dawn calculated that they had gone from the island of Hierro up to then five hundred and seventy-eight leagues westward. The smaller reckoning, which the admiral showed to the men, made it five hundred and eighty-four leagues, but the true distance, which the admiral calculated and kept secret, was seven hundred and seven.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2nd: He kept on his course, night and day, for thirty-nine leagues, to the west; he reckoned to the men a matter of thirty leagues. The sea was always smooth and calm. "To God many thanks be given," the admiral says here. Weed was floating from east to west, contrary to that which was generally the case. Many fish appeared; one was killed. They saw a white bird which seemed to be a gull.
