Homily, Christmas of the Millennium-December 18, 1999.
How beautiful to hear all together, here, in silence, the Gospel that reminds us of how God came to be "God with us" (Mt 1: 23); how he was received by Mary and by Joseph. We exalt with joy the Holy Trinity that shines humbly and hidden in this Holy Family. While the Holy Spirit works the Incarnation in Mary (who is pure availability, totally allowing God to do as he wishes), the Father-represented in that "angel of God"-makes all the external arrangements with Saint Joseph (who is pure obedience, just getting up in the morning and doing what he's commanded). And they all revolve around the Child Jesus, the favorite Son of the Father, the One anointed by the Holy Spirit, the one anticipated by the nations. The one who came to save his people from their sins. He who comes every day to be with us in each Eucharist. Jesus, in whom we believe and whom we wait until he returns.
