The next three weeks were busy ones at Green Gables, as Anne prepared to go to Queen's. There was much sewing to be done and many things to discuss and arrange. Anne's outfit was ample and pretty, thanks to Matthew, and for once, Marilla made no objections to anything he purchased or suggested. One evening, she went up to the east gable with her arms full of delicate pale green material.

"Anne, here's something for a nice light dress for you. I don't suppose you really need it; you've plenty of pretty waists. But I thought you might like something really dressy to wear if you get invited out in town, to a party or anything like that. Jane, Ruby, and Josie have 'evening dresses,' and I don't want you to be behind them. I got Mrs. Allan to help me pick it out in town last week, and we'll get Emily Gillis to make it up for you. Emily has taste, and her fits are unequaled."
