Longreach, the capital centre of a great squatting district, was en fete. Their wives and daughters, resplendent in jewels and costly apparel of the latest vogue, vied with one another in the elegance of their attire.
Though the appointments of the racecourse and show grounds were not those of a Flemington, a Randwick, or an Ascot, the beauty and fashion of western femininity at the gay carnival would not have disgraced a meeting at any of the capital cities.
